This is a wonderful little magazine for us freats, with recipes and studies and information to help us understand our food allergies and intolerances better – sadly it’s not available in HK, but as an online site it’s a great resource.

What does it mean to be a gluten-freat? It’s almost becoming a buzz word in Hong Kong with people becoming more conscious and concerned about what they eat, supermarkets dedicating sections for products catering to such diet requirements, organic shops opening up around town with labels for each freat product they have. It’s a craze taking over Hong Kong… so let’s get into it a bit
From our trusty friend Wikipedia:
a gluten-free diet is a diet completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, and triticale, as well as the use of gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent.
Gluten is the name for glue-binding proteins in flour, which in some people can damage their small intestine (celiac disease) and in general can effect ones digestive system.
Other symptoms for gluten allergies/intolerances include skin problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, mouth ulcers, anaemia, osteoporosis, weight loss, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal bloating and asthma to name a few. Of course these will vary for each individual. If you think you might be intolerant to gluten, try cutting it out for a few weeks and see how you feel. Alternatively have a allergy test done, we’re researching some of the clinics so will post them soon.
Sprouts.com’s gluten-free guide is easy to read, packed with information, and what to eat and what not to eat. It is American based store, so there’s a little push for their products, but it’s still pretty handy for us. Click here to read the full guide.
So what are “freats?” Freats is our affectionate name for “free – eaters”.
We are not a group of friends who demand to eat what we want, when we want – quite the contrary! We are a group of friends who have something in common in our lifestyles, and share the various joys and frustrations that comes with it.
We are eaters of gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, nut-free foods and other food intolerances.
This is a blog by a group of childhood friends who each have their own cocktail of allergies and intolerances. We are all currently based in Hong Kong – an amazing non-stop city, where it’s a little more difficult to live as a freat with limited resources and local products. So this is where we come in (with the help of the world wide web). We will be posting reviews, insights, places to eat and shop so check back weekly and feel free to send us a note and share your experiences.
